President’s Awards

This award was created in 2010 to recognize individuals who have made a truly noteworthy contribution to the environment of Lake James. Nominees are considered for their consistent record of support for the positive and pristine nature of the Lake James environment.  Such accomplishments should be demonstrable, consistent, and long lasting.

At the 2012 Annual Meeting the President’s Award was presented to long-time member Bill Hendley. Bill grew up along the Catawba River, helped farm the land and swam in the river, so love of the area is in his blood. He was an early member of LJEA and still participates in the monthly water sampling program that he helped develop. He served many years as a board member and was a previous president of the Association. Bill also co-founded the McDowell Trails Association and, as you know, is responsible for collaborating with many others to create the Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway. Bill is a quiet, self-effacing person, who has been called a wise, old soul. He has enriched our community with clean water, scenic walkways and trails, and his examples of leadership and service have benefited all of us. George asked Bill to come forward and then read the inscription on the plaque prior to presenting it.

2011 – Ken Harris

The second President’s Award was presented to Ken Harris, a former Board Member and LJEA President. Mr. Harris is a native of McDowell County, a local business man, and a conservationist. He has worked decades to protect and preserve not only Lake James, but to preserve and protect the local heritage he loves so deeply. Mr. Harris accepted the award graciously and provided those in attendance with a heart-felt speech describing his passion for the area and his conservation activities over the years.
